CommUnityCare, located in Austin, TX, is one of the largest primary care systems of Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC) in Texas. Our outpatient practice sites are located within Travis County and we provide outstanding patient care in pediatrics, internal medicine, dental, women's health and family medicine. In addition, the organization has integrated behavioral health services and lab support for our patients. CommUnityCare has recently been awarded Joint Commission (JACHO) accreditation in recognition of the excellent standard of care provided by our practice.

The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) provides medical leadership in collaboration with the executive team and interfaces with the medical staff to further the clinical goals and strategic objectives of CommUnityCare. As a member of the executive team for the organization, the CMO position provides a physician perspective at the executive management level and performs the necessary clinical leadership to carry out our mission.

The multi-specialty medical staff includes over 60 physicians, dentists, nurse practitioners and physician assistant providers, furnishing over 250,000 visits per year. This individual will establish and maintain a collaborative working relationship with medical, dental, nursing, behavioral, performance improvement and administrative staff. This individual will be an integral part of ensuring the organization's provider recruitment efforts, financial health, work in a collaborative fashion with the CEO for the integration and growth of the organization and represent CommUnityCare at appropriate professional organizations and the greater Austin medical community.

We are seeking a seasoned, talented individual with relevant experience in medical staff organizational leadership as Chief Medical Officer or other senior medical leader in a similar-sized Federally Qualified Healthcare System, community health center system, large outpatient medical practice or healthcare system. This individual must possess excellent provider relationship skills and the ability to work collegially with all medical professionals.

Duties of the Chief Medical Officer:

Ensure the quality of patient care services is monitored and evaluated and appropriate corrective actions are taken based on findings.

Leads the provider recruitment effort to ensure clinics are properly staffed with qualified providers and mid-levels.

Assist in the development and enforcement of infection control policies and procedures.

Monitor and evaluate all programs and/or services to ensure achievement of system-wide, uniform standards of medical clinical practice, medical quality assurance/management programs, practice guidelines and protocols and interdisciplinary collaboration, such as standing delegation orders for nurses or nurse practitioners and policies and procedures related to patient care.

Assist in the development, implementation and maintenance of all treatment and prevention services and public health medical programs in accordance with federal, state, and local community health regulations and standards.

Provide direct services in the health centers.

Maintain effective working relationships with local and state regulatory agencies, local health delivery systems, civic and consumer groups concerned with the delivery, quality and accessibility of services and care.

  • Graduation from a college or university accredited by the American Medical Association with a Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathy degree. Must have a minimum of five years clinical practice and five years experience in an administrative capacity. Master's Degree in a healthcare or business related field preferred.
  • Must have current unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Texas or ability to obtain in a mutually agreed upon timeframe. Board Certification in area of specialty plus current Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and Department of Public Safety (DPS) registrations for the purpose of writing prescriptions and current Basic Life Support Certification for Healthcare providers.

About CommUnityCare

CommUnityCare provides services at 18 locations in Travis County. Each year, our health centers provide approximately 200,000 medical and dental patient appointments. This number represents more than 50,000 individual patients. CommUnityCare provides outpatient primary healthcare, dental, behavioral health services. We also provide HIV/AIDS treatment at our David Powell location, and care for the homeless at the ARCH. These services are provided to Travis County residents whose incomes and lack of private health insurance qualify them for enrollment.

Two of our locations, Red River and William Cannon, were designed to expand access by providing walk-in services to patients in our system. These clinics offer extended hours and weekend care.

Approximately 74 percent of our patients are Hispanic, 12 percent are Caucasian, 11 percent are African American, and 3 percent are other ethnicities. Forty-two percent are uninsured, 32 percent have Medicaid/Medicaid coverage, 7 percent have Medicare, and the Medical Assistance Program (MAP) covers 19 percent. Children age zero to 17 years represent 29 percent of the total patient population served. Sixty-three percent are women.
